The kitchen isn't just a place to prepare meals; it's the heart of your home - a space where flavours come to life, conversations flow, and memories are created. This is where family and friends gather, where laughter and stories intertwine, and where the comforting aroma of freshly cooked dishes fills the air.  Including beautiful and practical feature lighting in your kitchen not only ensures you have excellent task lighting but also creates a focal point in the heart of your home—a place where you'll love to spend your time.

How many kitchen pendant lights do I need?

When it comes to the number and size of pendant lights for your kitchen bench, there’s an art to achieving visual harmony. If you’ve got a smaller bench, two pendants can be a classy addition, giving you a gorgeous focal point without overwhelming the space. But a longer bench gives you options as you can go for multiple pendant lights to create a balanced look.

Multiple Pendants

If you plan to hang multiple pendant lights over a long kitchen bench or island, the spacing between them depends on their size and the width of the bench. A common approach is to space the pendants evenly along the length of the bench, ensuring they are centred. Allow approximately 20 centimetres of space from each edge of the kitchen bench,  and then space the kitchen pendant lights from that point.  After marking the starting points, you can then evenly space the pendant lights along the length of the bench.

Bench Width

Consider the width of your kitchen bench when determining the number and spacing of pendant lights. If your bench is particularly wide, you may need more pendants or wider-spaced pendants to provide adequate illumination and visual balance.

Pendant Size

The size of the pendant lights themselves will influence the spacing. Larger pendants may require more space between them, while smaller ones can be placed closer together.

You need to make sure the size and quantity match your bench and ceiling height, so they balance both the length and width or your bench and the vertical space to the ceiling. You don't want the lighting to be so big it dominates the space or too small either as it will disappear into the background.

What height do I hang kitchen pendant lights?

Getting the height of your kitchen pendant lights right is essential for both function and aesthetics. For standard ceiling heights of around 2.5 – 2.7 metres, you want to hang them about 80 - 90 centimetres above your kitchen bench. This ensures good lighting for your tasks without the risk of bumping your head or blocking your view.

Making a statement with higher ceilings

If you're fortunate enough to have higher ceilings, you have a unique canvas to work with. The generous vertical space offers a chance to create a striking design statement with your kitchen pendant lighting. To maintain visual balance in rooms with high ceilings, you need to go BIG! Opt for larger pendant lights that can fill the expanded visual space and create a sense of grandeur, or they will be dwarfed by the space and look out of proportion.
